Episode 39: The Power of Mindset and Your Mental Health

The Question: How are you taking care of your mind?

We’re always so conscious about our physical health. But what about your mental health? Lori Alvarez and Amy Cruz are going to share a few of their own experiences with mental health as they reflect on our focused series for Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month. And in honor of that, we are focusing on what’s going on in our heads.

Mental health is so, so important. It’s especially essential for Real Estate Agents. Agents are talking to multiple people a day about deep thinking topics. “Every day we're out there hustling to help our clients find, buy just the right home, sell, make just the right decision financially, for their futures,” said Lori Alvarez.

Did you know Lori Alvarez boxes?

Yup. Every day she wakes up, does an hour of cycling, and about an hour of boxing to keep herself in good physical shape. And if she feels like and has the time, she works out again. She absolutely loves it.

What about your mental fitness?

48,000 people in 2018 died by suicide.

It’s the leading cause of death in the United States.

In the last 20 years, it’s gone up 35%.

How are we supporting each other in our mental health?

What different kinds of mental health are there?

  • mood disorders (such as depression or bipolar disorder)

  • anxiety disorders

  • personality disorders

  • psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia)

  • eating disorders

  • trauma-related disorders (such as post-traumatic stress disorder)

  • substance abuse disorders

“Every time you fail, you are rewiring your brain.”

Lori Alvarez is an embracer of failure. She’s not afraid to try something new and find out if it works. She loves failing forward. And just like the Podcast Mindset Mentor mentioned, you need to wire your brain. The way you think will determine how you function.

“It is so important that we make sure that we're wiring our little ones so that they are set up for success,” reminded Lori.

Share what you’re going through.

Did you know Lori took kindergarten twice? Yup. When her parents were divorcing, Lori didn’t speak for a whole year, so she had to take the class again.

It can be scary to share what you’re going through with someone. The hurts, the struggles, the fears, the anxieties.

But you know what? BE BOLD. Say HEY, I need support. I NEED someone to HELP ME. Because someone will.

We live in a newer society that places such a high importance on mental awareness and health. Even the NFL Players Association is talking about it with a Video Movement. Big, tough, Football players. They are going through life too. Just like you. And they’re brave enough to say, HEY.

Your story can save someone else or save you. So don’t be afraid to share what you’re going through.

So what’s the first thing you’re going to do when you wake up tomorrow?

Every day I will this:

  1. Move my body

  2. Take a screen time break

  3. Say three things I’m grateful for and write them down

Amy Cruz is grateful for:

  1. Her health

  2. Her babies

  3. Her husband

The real estate business is always available to pray with you and support you and help you in your challenges.
